About Johann August Altwasser

Excerpts from
"A Journey of Discovery, 2005, Karl Lenz.

Central Poland

August Altwasser was born on October 13, 1841 in Rozniatov, Dabie, Poland. August's father died when he was thirteen years old and his mother moved from Ladawy back to her birth village of Rozniatov. When his mother remarried in 1857 August was fifteen years old. At age 21 August married Anna Hiller of Dabrowa, Rozniatov, daughter of Andreas Hiller and Dorothea Bomen. Anna Hiller was very likely the niece of August's step-father, Danial Hiller, or at least a cousin. After their marriage, they moved to Colony Czyste, located south and west of Uniejow and south of Turek, where August worked as a miller.

1841 - 1880

Over the next fifteen years or so, August and his family moved to various villages in the Dabie area of Poland where he continued to work as a miller. These villages can be identified based on the places of birth of their children. Emilia was born in 1864 in Czyste , Ottillie in 1866 in Dabrowa, Adolf was born in 1868 in Dabie and died in 1871 in Karszew, Karl was born in 1870 in Chwalborzyce, Caroline in 1872 in Kossow, Julianne was born at an unknown place and time, Adolf was born in 1877 in Drzewe, Johann was born in 1879 in Kadzilowa. The next two children were born in the Shitomir Parish, Volhynia, Russia.

Based on the above, it seems that August had to move to find work in the 1860's and 1870's in Poland. The reason for this is unknown, but it must have been very difficult on the family. The final move seems to have been made to Volhynia, Russia in the late 1870's or early 1880's, where brother Friedrich Wilhelm Altwasser had moved about 1872. Of the four brothers, three had moved to Volhynia. Karl Julius appears to have stayed behind in the Dabie area of Poland.

Children of Johann August Altwasser and Anna Hiller

  • Emilie Altwasser born September 18, 1864 in Czyste, Dabie, Poland. She married Julius Bannisch in Shitomir Parish, Wolhynia, Russia on April 20, 1885.
  • Ottilie Altwasser born on April 17, 1866 in Dabrowa,Rozniatow, Dabie, Poland.
  • Adolf Altwasser born on September 1, 1868 in Dabrowa, Dabie, Poland. Died in 1871 at Karszew.
  • Karl Altwasser was born on June 9, 1870 in Chwalborzyce, Poland and married Emilie Muth in in Bresna, Volhynia in 1896. Some of Karl's descendants who came to Canada wrote an incredible story which gives us some insight into the lives of those who remained in Volhynia.

  • Urkunden Register, gmina Berezno, entry 5192, indicates the birth registry of Karl Altwasser
Parents given names, Jan-Augusta (Johann-August) and Anny (Anna) on June 10, 1870.

  • Karoline Altwasser was born on November 29, 1872 in Kossow, Poland. Her name shows up in the EWZ files as the wife of Gottlieb Schmidtke and the mother of three daughters, Florentine, Teofile and Ida Schmidtke. The three daughters were uncertain about the birth place of their parents, but all three stated they were born in Antonowka and that both parents had died (gestorben) in Antonowka.
  • Adolf Altwasser was born born on January 31,1877 in Drzewce, Dabie, Poland and was still alive on January 26, 1940. He married Emma Langner in 1913 or 1915. Emma's file said 1913 and Adolf's file said 1915. One of the dates quite likely is a typographical error. They had four known children, two boys and two girls.
  • Johann Altwasser born on June 24, 1879 in Kadzilowa, Dabie, Poland. He married Pauline Labrenz on August 28, 1900 in Tuczyn. Pauline was born on January 1, 1879 in Pieczalowka, Tuczyn Parish, Volhynia, Russia, the daughter of Michael Labrenz and Florentine Krueger.

    Census image, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany,
    October 9, 1919.

Johann Altwasser, his wife Pauline, a daughter Hulda and a son Wilhelm are listed in the October 9, 1919 Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, Census. Three family members had birthplaces in Russian Poland or Volhynia; the exception was Wilhelm, born in 1917 at Orsk, (Orenberg Republic), Siberia.  Hypothesis:   The family was probably deported to Siberia in 1915 by Russian authorities, subsequently became refugees after the 1917 Revolution and requested Prussian citizenship in 1919. No other information is known.
  • Gustav Altwasser  Gustav Altwasser, the son of Johann August Altwasser and Anna Hiller, was born February 26, 1882 in Antonowka. In September 1920, on a Sunday afternoon, Gustav Altwasser was shot to death in front of his wife and his children by four Bolshevik soldiers, a victim of war-time hostilities between Poland and Russia .
  • Florentine Altwasser was born on February 15, 1885 in Antonufka, Wolhynien (Volhynia). Her EWZ file number is 39080 and her parents are August Altwasser and Anna Hiller. She married Ernst Peglau in Tutschin on January 28, 1903 and is listed as his wife in EWZ file number 39243. This last file also shows three children, Sarah, Wanda and Adolf.
  • Julianne Altwasser. Julianne Altwasser was the last known child born to August Altwasser and Anna Hiller about 1887. Her first husband was Wilhelm Kirschbaum. One daughter, Teofile (geb.Kirschbaum) Hironymczuk, was born in Siberia in 1916. In her EWZ document #37452, Teofile stated both of her parents were dead (gestorben); Wilhelm died in Sinakowka and Julianna geb. Altwasser died in Wielkopole.

Julianne's second husband was Karl Schnetzke. Karl Schnetzke was born on October 10, 1889 in Zcerzynke (Oczerecianka) or Wielkepole. His parents names are unknown. Four Schnetzke children were unmarried in 1940 and indicated that thier father Karl Schnetzke was still alive. They further verified the death of their mother, Julianna, in Wielkopole

Kostopol Market 1905
Cultural Insight

An arranged marriage was not uncommon.

Both Johann August Altwasser, our miller from Antonowka, and Gottlieb Langner, another miller from Wielke Pole, conducted agricultural and other business with district residents at the local Kostopol farmers market.

It was here that Gottlieb Langner introduced his sixteen year old daughter Pauline to a young Gustav Altwasser and informed her that he was to be her future husband. Many years later Pauline told her daughter Alma that it very very embarrassing for her and she did not know what to say when her father gave her hand in marriage. His father invited them both to a Wurstbrot and Schnaps afterwards. Happily, Pauline and the dark haired young man with blue eyes also approved of each other and they were married during the summer of 1905.

Pauline was the first Langner daughter to be married and she got a large dowry. Her father gave them land, 7 cows and a horse as well as everything that they needed. Naturally her husband also received a substantial number of gifts. The wedding was a true village fest. All their friends and relatives were invited, as well as all the neighbours from both villages. The celebration lasted for three days, normal for a wedding celebrated by a well to do couple. Her father said he had to splurge for this occasion. There was a lot of good food, cooking , baking and of course no shortage of schnapps. In any case, Pauline said it was the nicest wedding which she had ever experienced in her life.

The newlywed couple lived with her parents until their house was completed, with many helping hands from people of the village. Both were industrious and built another windmill because Gustav was also a Miller. Self sufficiency came by selling surplus grain and cattle at the market and buying only material items they could not produce themselves. The young couple were happy and content.

The year of her death, but not the exact date, was revealed in the EWZ Fragebogen (Questionnaire), Kenn/Nr. 129627, for the Ernst Peglau Family. Ernst Peglau was married on January 28, 1903, in Tuszyn, to daughter Florentine Altwasser.

  • The EWZ Files

Researching the 1939-1945 German Resettlement Films has revealed previously unknown genealogical information about the family of August Altwasser and Anna Hiller.

During World War II more than 2.9 million individuals were processed by the German Immigration Center (EWZ), headed by Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler to facilitate the resettlement of ethnic Germans from other parts of Europe. As these ethnic Germans arrived in Germany, they were first registered and photographed. All individuals over the age of 15 were registered and photographed individually. Everyone was subject to a health and racial examination to determine their qualifications for German settlement and citizenship. This resettlement was part of a much larger plan by Himmler and the Schutzstaffel (SS) to create a pure race of Germanic people throughout the Third Reich.

The documents of the German Immigration Center (EWZ) were captured in Bavaria by the U.S. Third Army in April, 1945 as German officials were preparing to destroy them. The documents were part of a much larger collection of SS documents and were thus of prime importance in the investigation into the acts of genocide committed by the SS during and preceding the war. These documents were transferred to the newly created Berlin Document Center in January, 1946, and later transferred to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The records were finally returned to the German government in 1994 after they had been microfilmed and indexed by National Archives staff. In 1996 the 8,600 microfilm rolls were made available to researchers at the National Archives II at College Park, Maryland.

There are several groups of records, each with their own index for research purposes. One group of records are the E/G Kartei (A3342-EWZ57), containing almost three million alphabetically arranged cards of all ethnic Germans processed by the German Immigration Center. The information collected includes the following: personal information such as given names, maiden name if married, date and place of birth and date and place of marriage; names of parents and siblings; the names of family members living within the same household; and physical characteristics such as height and weight. Each individual was assigned a unique EWZ number, used throughout the collection of files.

A second group of records are the Anträge, containing the files of over 400,000 applications. These records are organized by country and regional subgrouping. The series of files pertaining to the Soviet Union are identified as A3342-EWZ50. These files contain an incredible amount of genealogical information, used by the Third Reich to determine the racial quality of the individuals concerned. The following information is included for each person as applicable: date and place of birth; date and place of marriage; names of parents and grandparents (including maiden names) including their dates and places of birth, marriage and death; name of spouse including dates and places of birth, marriage and death; names of all children including their dates and places of birth and EWZ number if they were over 15 years old; a complete listing of where each individual lived and when he or she lived there; years the individual attended school and the location of the school; dates of entry into the Third Reich; copies of naturalization applications and certificates and passports; and in many cases a life story. Records also exist for persons of German ancestry who lived in Poland before World War II (A3342-EWZ52) and in the Baltic region (A3342-EWZ53), along with other areas throughout Europe.

    Notes for JULIANNE ALTWASSER:

Julianne has not been positively identified as the daughter of August Altwasser and Anna Hiller, but lived in the same area as Karl, Adolf and Florentine Altwasser, who identified their parents August Altwasser and Anna Hiller.

Her first husband was quite likely Wilhelm Kirschbaum. It appears Wilhelm and Julianne were among the 100,000 ethnic Germans from the Rovno area that were banished to Siberia between 1914 and 1917.

Julianne's second husband was Karl Schnetzke and they had at least four children. Karl Schnetzke was born on October 10, 1889 in Zcerzynke (Oczerecianka) or Wielkepole. His parents names are unknown. In 1940, the name of Karl Schnetzke appears on an inhabitants list for Wielkopole with a wife named Mathilde. However, no birth date is given to verify if this is the same person and no maiden name is given for Mathilde to help identify her background. The four Schnetzke children were unmarried in 1940 and indicated that thier father Karl Schnetzke was still alive. They further verified the death of their mother, Julianna, in Wielkopole.

    Sources:

EWZ Files #37174 and 37452  identify Julianne Altwasser as the mother of Teofile Kirschbaum.  Teofile Kirschbaum was born in 1916 in Siberia.   It appears that Wilhelm Kirschbaum become deceased in Sienakowka between June 1916 and  February 1919.

EWZ File# 37151Z is the file for August Schnetzke which states his father's birth date and place of birth as Wielkie Pole and that his father lived in Zgierz.  Zgierz was the transport destination of the four Snetzke children originating in Wielke Pole.

EWZ File #37042/Z identifies Julianne as the mother of Helene Schnetzke, no birth date, birthplace as Kurgan and dead in Wilkipol.

EWZ File #37043/Z  identifies Julianne as the mother of Martha Schnetzke, same as above.

EWZ File #37151/Z  identifies Julianne as the mother of August Schnetzke, date of birth 1887, place of birth: Antonowka and that she died in Wilkie Pole.

EWZ File #37044/Z  identifies Julianne as the mother of Lydia Schnetzke,  no birth date, birthplace as Kurgan and dead in Wilkipol.

    Notes for KARL SCHNETZKE:

EWZ File# 37151Z is the file for August Schnetzke stating that Karl Schnetzke, was born on October 10, 1889 in Zcerzynke (Oczerecianka) or Wielkepole. Karl's parents names are unknown.

    Notes for WILHELM KIRSCHBAUM:

EWZ File #37174is the file for Waldemar Hyronymczuk which states that the parents of his wife Teofile

Kirschbaum are Wilhelm Kirschbaum and Julianne Altwasser. Teofile stated both of her parents were dead (gestorben); Wilhelm died in Sinakowka and Julianna geb. Altwasser died in Wielkopole.

An area map shows that Wielkopole and Sieniakowka are close to each other.  (These are the spellings on the map)

Children of JULIANNE ALTWASSER and KARL SCHNETZKE are:

                  i.   HELENE3 SCHNETZKE, b. February 8, 1919, Wilkipol -  EWZ File # 37042.

                 ii.   MARTHA SCHNETZKE, b. September 7, 1920, Wilkipol -  EWZ File # 37043/Z.

                iii.   AUGUST SCHNETZKE, b. May 5, 1922, Jablonne  (37151Z).

iv.   LYDIA SCHNETZKE, b. August 24, 1924, Wielke Pole (EWZ File 37044).

Child of JULIANNE ALTWASSER and WILHELM KIRSCHBAUM is:

    14.        v.   TEOFILE3 KIRSCHBAUM, b. June 14, 1916, Siberien (Siberia)  EWZ FILE #37452.

    7.  GUSTAV2 ALTWASSER (AUGUST1) was born February 16, 1882 in Antonowka, Shitomir Parish, Wolhynia, Russia, and died 1920 in Jablon, Wolhynia, Poland.  He married PAULINE LANGNER.

    Notes for GUSTAV ALTWASSER:

The research of Karl Lenz shows that Gustav Altwasser, the son of Johann August Altwasser and Anna Hiller, was born February 26, 1882 in Antonowka.  EWZ file 127607 for Eduard Altwasser provides a vital link to this data because it indicates Gustav as his father, Pauline Langner as his mother and his paternal grandfather as Johann Altwasser.  Gustav Altwasser died in 1920 at Jablon (Jablonnje), a victim of war-time hostilities.

    Expropriation lists 1915

The expropriation lists include people whose land was seized in 1915. These lists were published in the Volhynian Area News in Zhitomir the following June. The lists include patrynomic names as well as the amount of land taken, in desitins. A name of interest appears on the list from Wielkopole (Welyke Pole), Kreis (Ujesd) Rowno, Beresenskaja Wolost, shown below. While not proven, this is quite likely the right Gustav.

    1920

Posession of a weapon was prohibited.

In September 1920, on a Sunday afternoon, Gustav Altwasser was shot to death in front of his wife and his children by four Bolshevik soldiers. They had searched his home and found a rifle from his war service with the Imperial Russian Army.   Baby Gustav was born on December 14, 1920.

In 1940, sons Eduard and August stated during separate EWZ interviews that their father Gustav had been shot.

  •

This corresponds with the time sequence of the war between Poland and Russia when Volhynia once again was returned to Polish control in 1920. The frontiers between Poland and Soviet Russia had not been clearly defined after WW I and the Poles held control of most of the disputed territories in 1919. Border skirmishes then escalated into open hostilities between Poland and Soviet Russia following a Polish attempt to take advantage of Russia's weakness with a major incursion into Ukraine in early 1920. The Bolsheviks mounted an April counter-offensive which was very successful. By mid-August, the Polish forces had retreated westward to the Polish capital of Warsaw. The Polish forces then achieved an unexpected and decisive victory during the Battle of Warsaw and began their advance eastward. The war ended with ceasefire in October 1920 and a formal peace treaty, the Peace Treaty of Riga, was signed on March 18, 1921
