Following political upheaval in Europe from the mid 18th century to the 1880's, the Weber families of German-Russian background fled to England. Offers of land and freedom in America looked attractive and some family members settled in Minnesota and Oregon. The family of Michael Weber boarded a cattle boat in England in 1893 and set out for Halifax, Canada. The seas were high and men were washed overboard unless chained to the deck. Lou Weber, only four years old, was chained next to his father while Roy at one year of age, was with his mother and sisters in the hold with the cattle.

The Michael Weber family travelled to Winnipeg by train and it is believed as far as Beausejour, Manitoba before travelling by oxcart to Lemberg in the North West Terretories. The first winter they camped on a hillside and later followed the trail from Lemberg to Yellow Grass. Louise was born in 1860 and died in 1918, twenty five years after her arrival in Canada.
